Mike Harris

A decorated Air Force veteran, first responder, and public servant, Mike Harris has proudly served his country, community, and neighbors throughout his adult life.

Following his service in the Air Force, Mike embarked on a systems management and technology career that began at Stanford University’s Research Libraries Group, where he managed a nationwide data network. This led to consulting on strategic planning projects and developing software, including the multi-billion-dollar FAA Advanced Automation Project. During the Savings and Loans Crisis, Mike led teams that protected depositors who had funds in failing institutions.

As a volunteer firefighter and paramedic, Mike later transitioned to an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) career, where he implemented Advanced Life Support (ALS) systems nationwide, inevitably being selected as Alameda County’s Emergency Medical Services Director. For more than two decades, Mike has worked as a first responder in Merced County, including the last 18 years with the Merced County Sheriff’s Department, where he serves as special projects coordinator.

Mike's contributions to emergency services have not gone unnoticed. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the State of Delaware EMS Administrator of the Year and the California Emergency Medical Services Agency Vision award.

A dedicated public servant, Mike serves his City of Merced neighbors as chair of the Planning Commission and on the City Tax Transparency Commission. He holds an elected position on the Merced County Employee’s Retirement Association and served for 16 years on the Merced County Emergency Medical Care Committee. His commitment has been recognized with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Lifesaving Award and the 2022 City of Merced Volunteer of the Year for District 4.

In his free time, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife, Shelly, and their daughter, Taylor. During football season, you can catch Mike officiating local high school football games on Friday nights.
